Freshwest Studio’s Brave New World Lamp was Created Like a Childhood Construction Game

August 6, 2014

The Brave New World Lamp, a complex design made from simple materials, was envisioned by award-winning UK design duo Freshwest after hours of experimentation. Its sculptural shape is a result of random, thought-initiated constructions approached without an initial plan, just like those childhood creations made of Meccano or LEGO.

To make the intricate lighting piece, the British designers didn’t follow a blueprint. The result is a fascinating structure that takes inspiration from Eastern bamboo scaffolding and the memories of childhood construction games. Made from square-sections of solid oak, and assembled using neither glue nor screws, this wonderful design brings out the warm soul of the wood in an intricate, mechanic way.

The Brave New World Lamp is distributed by Dutch brand Moooi and features two intriguing cast iron weights that seem to be out of place, but in fact they change the light’s angle and balance the whole structure.
