The city’s Economic Development and the Trust For Governors Island on Thursday announced that daily, year-round ferry service to Governors Island will begin on Monday, January 24. The NYC Ferry will add a stop at Yankee Pier on its South Brooklyn Route between Red Hook and Sunset Park, connecting New Yorkers to the island from the Lower East Side and Brooklyn. The new service’s hours will coincide with the Island’s new winter hours, open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The city announced last September plans to open Governors Island all year, promising New Yorkers expanded ferry access.

“We’re proud to deliver on the promise of daily, year-round ferry service to Governors Island as part of our continuing expansion of NYC Ferry’s five-borough network, which has become an integral part of New York’s transportation system and the City’s recovery,” Rachel Loeb, NYCEDC president, said. “We join Mayor Adams in congratulating the Trust for Governors Island and all of our partners who have worked so hard to turn this vision into reality.”

Last August, the ferry system added the St. George route, which connected Staten Island to the west side of Manhattan. Last month, the NYC Ferry system opened a new stop at Ferry Point Park in Throgs Neck, giving commuters from the Bronx an easier and more reliable means of public transportation to the rest of the city. Future plans include a new Coney Island ferry route set to launch in late 2022.

“I am thrilled that New Yorkers will finally be able to take NYC Ferry to the gem that is Governors Island – every day, all year round,” Maria Torres-Springer, Deputy Mayor for Economic and Workforce Development, said. “I applaud NYCEDC and the Trust for Governors Island for their work to make this incredible asset more accessible, and I look forward to even more people experiencing and enjoying all Governors Island has to offer.”

Also for the first time ever, dogs will be allowed on Governors Island. Every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. starting January 22 through May 1, dog owners can bring their pets and enjoy the 172-acre Island with plenty of space to explore, including car-free pathways, open fields, and a new dog park.

With the new ferry service making Governors Island easily accessible, New Yorkers can enjoy the Island’s winter season festivities, which the Trust announced last month. Guests can visit the transformed Colonels Row, which has become a winter village offering festive activities like ice skating and sledding, as well as serving food and drinks.
