New store selling all Brooklyn-made goods opening at Industry City
What started as a Brooklyn-themed holiday pop-up will now operate year-round. The 1,200-square-foot marketplace Brooklyn Made will open in Sunset Park's Industry City this month, with over 50 Brooklyn-based vendors selling merchandise, artwork, beauty products, houseware, and more. The shop will open in Industry City's Innovation Alley on Thursday, May 18.

City breaks ground on $1.6B project to protect Gowanus Canal from pollution
New York City on Wednesday broke ground on one of two new underground storage tanks that will prevent pollution of Brooklyn's Gowanus Canal. The $1.6 billion project will prevent up to 12 million gallons of sewer overflow from entering the canal during rainstorms and flooding events. The first tank, bounded by Nevins Street, Butler street, and Degraw Street, will hold up to eight million gallons of sewage waste and include 3.6 acres of public open space on the waterfront.

Famed comedy club Second City to open first NYC location in Williamsburg
A famed Chicago comedy institution is set to open an outpost in New York City for the first time. The Second City, a 63-year comedy and improv enterprise that has kickstarted the careers of many celebrities, announced it will open in Williamsburg, Brooklyn next summer.

Trader Joe’s new Williamsburg store opens this week
Brooklynites, rejoice: Trader Joe's third location in the borough is opening this week. Bright and early on Friday, December 10, the grocery store will open at 200 Kent Avenue in Williamsburg. Kicking off at 8 a.m., the grand opening celebration includes live music and a reusable bag giveaway.

A new Brooklyn Trader Joe’s is opening in Williamsburg this year

Cauliflower gnocchi and dark chocolate peanut butter cups will soon be easier to come by in north Brooklyn. As was first reported by Greenpointers, Trader Joe's will be opening its third location in the borough this year. Currently, the beloved grocer has stores at City Point in Downtown Brooklyn and in Brooklyn Heights. The new outpost will be in Williamsburg at 200 Kent Avenue, a new commercial building between North 2nd and 3rd Streets near the waterfront.

Climate change-themed mini-golf course opens at Two Trees’ waterfront site in Williamsburg
On the site of a proposed mixed-use development in Williamsburg, a temporary climate change-themed miniature golf course has opened. Two Trees Management on Monday announced visitors can now enjoy Putting Green, an 18-hole course designed by local groups that focuses on sustainability and climate issues, as well as a 25,000-square foot sustainable farm. The pop-up mini-golf course sits on the future site of the developer's project "River Ring," which includes two huge towers designed by Bjarke Ingels with more than 1,050 units of housing, a new YMCA, and a public beach.

Petition launches to save artifacts of Dead Horse Bay ahead of radioactive waste cleanup
Covered with bottles, ceramics, and other 1950s household items and debris, Dead Horse Bay is a treasure trove in southern Brooklyn for collectors and historians. Last August, the National Park Service closed the southern part of the refuse-filled spot after finding radioactive contamination. Now, a petition has launched urging the NPS to collect and preserve as much as the debris as possible at Dead Horse Bay ahead of its planned cleanup of the site.

Dr. Anthony Fauci honored as ‘Brooklyn COVID Hero’
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, was honored by his hometown borough this week for his work throughout the coronavirus pandemic. Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams on Tuesday named Fauci, who grew up in Bensonhurst and Dyker Heights, a "COVID-19 Hero," for helping others amid the health crisis.

New York will construct a statue of Ruth Bader Ginsburg in her native Brooklyn
United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will be recognized with a statue in her hometown of Brooklyn, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Saturday, just one day after the death of the trailblazing icon. Born in 1933 to Russian-Jewish immigrants and raised in a clapboard house on East 9th Street in Midwood, Ginsburg attended the city's public schools and later Cornell and Columbia Universities. In 1993, Ginsburg, who fought for gender equality her entire career, became the second woman to ever serve as a justice on the Supreme Court.

Three acres of new green space open at Brooklyn Bridge Park
Three acres of new parkland opened at Brooklyn Bridge Park on Monday, putting construction of the waterfront park one step closer to completion. Located east of Pier 2, the Pier 2 Uplands features a 6,300 square foot lawn and a new water play area made up of salvaged pieces of Pier 3. Runoff water from the play area will be caught by an underground retention tank and will be reused for irrigation throughout the site.

City seeks historic boat concession at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6
A historic vessel could soon permanently dock at Brooklyn Heights' waterfront park. The Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation this month issued a request for proposals (RFP) seeking operators for the long-term docking of a ship with historical significance to serve as an educational or cultural center at the park's Pier 6. Historic boats have previously operated at the pier on a seasonal basis, but the group is looking for a more permanent amenity, as the Wall Street Journal first reported.
