Looking for something to do in this great city now that the weather has warmed up? We’ve rounded up some of this week’s best art, design and architecture events to kick off the month of May.

Times Square Arts’ Midnight Moment is turning two! Celebrate this month as Leslie Thornton’s Binocular Menagerie takes over the advertising screens each night, and transforms them into an urban jungle of kaleidoscopic visuals of animals.

Innovators: Building Design and Construction

The Museum of the City of New York, 1220 Fifth Avenue, May 6 at 6:30 pm.

This panel discussion covers everything about how modern architecture and engineering are changing. Join Jill Lerner, Principal at Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF) and 2013 President of the AIA New York Chapter, for a discussion with architects Corie Sharples (SHoP Architecture) and Marianne Kwok (KPF), and engineers Valentine A. Lehr (Lehr Consultants International) and Guy Nordenson (Guy Nordenson Associates) about design innovation in the 21st century.

Swoon Braddock Tile Benefit

Kinfolk Studios, 90 Wythe Avenue, Brooklyn. May 7, 7-10 pm.

Recently celebrating the opening of her installation at the rotunda in the Brooklyn Museum, street artist Swoon hosts a benefit tonight for Braddock Tile as part of the SELECT Art Fair. Visitors can pick up limited edition prints from Swoon, Ian Kuali’I, Jerome Lagarrigue and Karmimadeebora, with proceeds going to Braddock.

Skylight at Moynihan Station, 360 West 33rd Street, May 8-11.

Amidst the week of art fairs, Collective has asserted itself as the premier destination to take in the best in contemporary design, featuring galleries that fuse fine art with the design world. The fair makes it second appearance in New York with a move to the historic Moynihan Post Office.

Charles James : Beyond Fashion

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue.

The newly renovated Costume Institute reopens May 8 with an exhibition of legendary couturier Charles James, featuring revolutionary ball gowns and innovative tailoring that continues to inspire modern designers.

Frieze

Frieze Art Fair

Randalls Island, May 9-12th.

The London art fair is making its 3rd appearance in New York City, bringing a roster of cutting edge galleries to Randalls Island. Visitors can take a ferry to the fair, experience special installations inspired by the history of the island, spend the night in a pop-up hotel within the fair and catch a panel discussion with Pussy Riot.

The citywide celebration of design is back, covering graphic design, fashion, architecture and urban design. With exhibitions, lectures, openings, installations and trade shows, its everything design all the time. The Center for Architecture has a roster of great programs in store for this year’s event!

Kara Walker, “A Subtlety or the Marvelous Sugar Baby” presented by Creative Time

The Domino Sugar Factory, South 1st Street at Kent Avenue, Williamsburg. Opening May 10.

Take a look inside the historic Domino Sugar Factory before it becomes redeveloped into the latest mixed-use community. Creative Time has commissioned Kara Walker to make a site specific installation inside the cavernous halls of the former sugar refinery. The piece pays tribute to artisans and workers in the sugar industry, reacting to the building’s history.

Mana-Contemporary

All the Best Artists Are my Friends (Part I)

Mana Contemporary, 888 Newark Ave, Jersey City. May 10, 1-7pm.

Jersey City’s mega art complex, Mana Contemporary, opens its doors for a massive group exhibition. The facility, which houses galleries, artist studios, lectures and performances, will showcase a group exhibition curated by Ray Smith. Also on display is The Very Best of Judy Chicago. Free shuttle buses leave every half hour from Milk Studios at 450 West 15th Street in Manhattan.

Socrates Sculpture Park, 32-01 Vernon Blvd, Long Island City, opening May 11.

Now that the weather is finally nice, head to Socrates Sculpture Park to check out Kempinas new site-specific installation, Scarecrow. The minimal piece is a 250 foot, 13 foot high kinetic pathway made of stainless steel poles, connected to glittering Mylar ribbons, which will interact with the elements.
