Eight years and several price cuts later, celebrity hairstylist Frédéric Fekkai has sold his Upper East Side apartment. Fekkai first purchased the four-bedroom duplex at 953 Fifth Avenue for $7.4 million in 2006 and later listed it in 2015 for $12 million, following a revamp by interior designer Robert Couturier. After coming on and off the market many times since then, the co-op finally sold this month for $4.5 million, according to city records.
Fekkai became a household name in the 1990s when he ran a salon inside Bergdorf Goodman and was the stylist for major A-listers, including Hillary Clinton when she was first lady.
According to a Wall Street Journal article from 2016, Fekkai purchased the Fifth Ave co-op from billionaire John Kluge. After first listing for $12 million in 2015, the apartment’s asking price dropped to $8.5 million the following year. Fetching $4.5 million, the apartment sold in June at a roughly 17 percent discount.
Christine Miller Martin, the Compass agent with the listing, declined to comment.
The redesign by Robert Couturier felt “obviously French,” according to the designer, with multiple fireplaces and a wood-paneled library made with 18th-century wood sourced from a home in France, as the WSJ noted.
From the private elevator entrance and foyer, a gallery opens into a living room with nearly 10-foot-tall ceilings and oversized casement windows that provide direct Central Park views.
Directly off the living room is the wood-paneled library with a fireplace featuring 18th-century chestnut wood paneling “imported from Versailles,” according to the listing. The bright formal dining room can easily accommodate ten guests.
The well-equipped eat-in kitchen features a six-burner Wolf stove and a Miele dishwasher. Additional storage, a second dishwasher, and two wine coolers can be found in the convenient butler’s pantry, found between the dining room and kitchen.
On the upper level of the apartment is the primary suite, which boasts direct park views through casement windows, a fireplace, a walk-in closet, and an elegant ensuite double bath.
This level is home to three additional bedrooms, three bathrooms, a washer-dryer, and a home office nook.
Built in 1926, the co-op building at 953 Fifth Avenue rises 14 stories and contains just seven units. The building has a full-time doorman and an elevator operator.
