Ahead of next year’s opening of the huge foodie destination from world-renowned Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten in the South Street Seaport, we’re getting a first look at the 53,000-square-foot space. Several restaurants and bars, fast-casual concepts, and a sprawling central market will open at the Tin Building, a restored early 20th-century waterfront structure that once housed the iconic Fulton Fish Market.

“When I came to New York City for the first time in 1985, a trip that launched my career, I went straight to the Fulton Fish Market on my second day and immersed myself in the market’s thriving activity in the heart of downtown Manhattan,” Vongerichten said.

“This project is a valued opportunity for me to recreate such a meaningful experience of discovery—incorporating favorite dishes that are global in scope and locally sourced, specially curated for a one-of-a-kind Seaport journey.”

Once part of the historic Fulton Fish Market, which closed and moved to Hunts Point 15 years ago, the Tin Building was built in 1907. In 2018, the structure was disassembled, put back together, and raised six feet roughly 30 feet from its original location, all part of the Howard Hughes Corporation’s revitalization plan of Pier 17 and the Seaport District.

Designed by SHoP Architects with interiors by Roman and William, the Tin Building will include six full-service restaurants, six fast-casual counters, and several bars focused on cocktails, craft beer, and wine and that will sell to-go beverages for those walking around the market. The establishment will be anchored by the Central Market, a marketplace selling local seafood, meats, cheeses, and more.

Restaurants include Shikku, a sushi and sake restaurant and late-night Izakaya, the House of the Red Pearl, a fine-dining eatery serving Chinese-inspired dishes, T.Brasserie, and a French brasserie offering rotisserie chicken specialties. Pizza and pasta will be available at the Frenchman’s Dough, with plant-based options from Seeds & Weeds.

Fast-casual spots include Mexican taqueria Taquito, on-the-go breakfast from Double Yolk, and T Café and Bakery. The dining destination will open to visitors in 2022.

“We are looking forward to sharing an experience that will differentiate the Tin Building from all other culinary experiences in NYC and will be a must-visit travel destination for New Yorkers and visitors alike,” Saul Scherl, president of the New York Tri-State Region for The Howard Hughes Corporation, said.

“The unprecedented combination of culinary options, historic location and incredible design is unrivaled in the food and beverage and tourism space.”
