The Grand Central Oyster Bar will reopen after 17-month closure
The subterranean, century-old oyster bar in Grand Central Terminal will finally reopen next month after nearly a year and a half. The historic Grand Central Oyster Bar announced it will open its doors on September 7 at 100 percent capacity, as Gothamist first reported. After a temporary Covid-related closure last March, the Midtown East restaurant and bar resumed indoor dining that September, only to close again less than two weeks later.
A statement on Grand Central Oyster Bar’s website reads: “As we re-open on September 7th we relish the opportunity to be of service again, and fill your hearts, and ours, with joy and do what we do best; offer an amazing experience to our beloved New Yorkers and to our friends from all over the world. Stay safe, be well and thank you for your continuous support!”
When the restaurant reopened last September, indoor dining was capped at 25 percent capacity in New York City. According to the restaurant, Grand Central Oyster Bar, which relies on commuters and tourists, could not do enough business at the time to stay open.
And outdoor dining, which thousands of city restaurants offered during the pandemic to keep their businesses afloat, was not a possibility since it’s located under Grand Central Terminal.
When it reopens on September 7, Grand Central Oyster Bar will require proof of vaccination for staff and diners, aligning with current city policy. According to Gothamist, the restaurant will operate at full capacity, with extra space between tables. To-go meals will also be available for pickup and delivery.
The lower-level restaurant first opened at Grand Central in 1913, boasting stunning Guastavino vaulted ceilings and archways. The Landmarks Preservation Commission landmarked its interiors in 1980, calling the vaults of the Oyster Bar in its designation report “simple and unornamented, relying purely on the beauty of their shape for effect.”
The Oyster Bar is open Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and will be closed on Saturday and Sunday.
