SERRA by Birreria, the popular Italian restaurant on the 14th-floor rooftop of Eataly, has transformed itself for the spring. “Serra will instantly transport guests to the Italian countryside,” the restaurant tells us, as it will become a beautiful, blooming greenhouse featuring seasonal dishes with ingredients sourced from the local Union Square Greenmarket. A portion of the proceeds during this time will be donated to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Children’s Garden, where children 2 to 17 years old have the chance to plant and harvest their own crops and flowers.
The new blooming version of SERRA opened yesterday and will run through the fall, with the menu changing monthly according to what’s in season. The space was designed by Milky Way Studios, who were “inspired by nature’s own flowering transformation.” It will “give guests the chance to experience the changing of the seasons firsthand.”
In a statement, Executive Chef Michael Nogera said: “I am excited about this iteration of Serra. It gives us the opportunity to evolve our dishes, especially the ones featuring produce. Spring has us looking forward [to] peas, mint, ramps, nettles, morels, and asparagus. As we move into summer, we can take some of those same dishes and use the summer harvest of tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, and green beans, and so on. We have a lot to play with in the way of local and peak season ingredients.”
The menu will include an all-new selection of Spiedini (or “skewers”) and seasonal pasta dishes. In addition, there will be an entirely new drink menu focused on botanicals, with cocktails made using Italian bitters, natural and biodynamic wines, and Italian IPAs with floral flavors.
