NYC’s live subway map now includes COVID-19 vaccination sites

Coronavirus vaccination sites located across New York City have been added to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s digital subway map, helping straphangers find the easiest route to their appointments. The map, which launched last October and provides real-time service updates, now features a syringe icon that marks the location of vaccine hubs in every borough.
Clicking on each site on the map pulls up specific information about the center, including the type of vaccine administered there, eligibility restrictions, hours of operation, and a link to schedule an appointment.
Last month, the MTA announced plans to enhance bus service from public housing complexes and community centers in Brooklyn and Queens to the state’s vaccination hubs at Medgar Evers College and York College. And with some vaccination sites now open overnight or 24/7, the agency restored some overnight service, with the system now running 22 hours per day, up from 20 hours.
“We know that many New Yorkers rely on public transit to get to a vaccination site,” NYC Transit Interim President Sarah Feinberg said in a press release. “Just as we did by launching new bus routes in Queens and Brooklyn last week, this new feature represents yet another way in which New York City Transit is thinking outside the box to make sure that the people of this city can seamlessly access the vaccination sites.”
The new map released last year is the first from the MTA to provide service updates to commuters in real-time. The map allows users to click on subway stations and individual train lines to see the actual wait time for the next train, with a zoom feature that shows the train movement from station to station.
The map–created pro bono by technology and design firm Work & Co.– modernizes both Massimo Vignelli’s iconic 1972 map and the current map designed by Michael Hertz, combining the geometric and graphic design-friendly Vignelli map with the geographical elements of Hertz, as 6sqft previously reported.
“In the face of a global pandemic, we see a responsibility to help people however we can — and digital tools have the power to bridge the information gap,” Felipe Memoria, founding partner at Work & Co, said in a press release.
