More than 80 NYC parks will shine bright with holiday light displays

Dozens of New York City parks will glow with holiday displays this year, bringing some much-needed cheer to all five boroughs. The city’s Parks Department last week released an interactive map that marks all of the menorah and Christmas tree lightings at parks and administrative buildings in the city by borough. The agency is encouraging New Yorkers to stay local and enjoy the illuminated green spaces in their neighborhoods.

“It is a time-honored tradition here at Parks to light our greenspaces and buildings up for the holidays. A tradition we derive great pride from and one that we are committed to continuing even in these most unprecedented times,” NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver said in a press release.
“We know that throughout this challenging year, people have looked to our parks for refuge and recreation, and we want to continue inspiring joy by spreading holiday cheer. We hope that our lights can help illuminate the hearts of all New Yorkers as we celebrate the holidays and what they mean to us all.”
If you’re looking for under-the-radar holiday light displays while avoiding the crowds of Rockefeller Center, NYC Parks recommends visiting Mosholu Parkway, Historic Richmond Town, MacDonald Park in Queens, and Litchfield Villa in Prospect Park. More sites will be added to the interactive map as they light up. Explore the map here.
In addition to the many displays in city parks, there are other light displays to check out this season, like the LuminoCity Festival on Randall’s Island Park, the dazzling “GLOW” experience at the New York Botanical Garden, the Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights, the holiday spectacle in Dyker Heights, and the Luminaries installation at Brookfield Place.
