Opulent Beekman Place mansion closes for $38M less than original listing price

More than six years ago, this opulent, eight-story mansion at 29 Beekman Place listed for $49.9 million. Just one year later, it dropped to $37.5 million, with another major price chop this April to $11.45 million. First spotted by Crain’s, city property records show that the controversial home near the UN has finally closed for $11.5 million. Crain’s explains that it was owned by the former princess of Iran, and was the center of a legal battle involving her sister since 2016. It also went into contract three times and fell through.
The 12,240-square-foot mansion was built in 1934 as the largest of all the grand homes being constructed along exclusive Beekman Place. Another claim to fame is that its first owner was CBS founder William S. Paley. The home has 10 bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, eight wood-burning fireplaces, an elevator, and three terraces that add up to 1,500 square feet of outdoor space.
In their listing, Compass had said that the property’s “size and grandeur” would make it a fit “for a private mansion, Live/Work, a Foundation, or an ideal Consulate/Diplomat Residence–with its proximity to the United Nations.” Since the purchase was done through an LLC, though, we don’t know who the buyer is.
The first floor holds an oval, banquet-sized dining room that can seat up to 18 guests. It’s connected to a small kitchen off the foyer and opens to one of the terraces. There’s also a wood-paneled library on this floor.
On the second floor, a grand landing opens to the formal living room, which features the home’s gorgeous dentil moldings and a street-facing Juliet balcony.
On the other end of the second floor, a parlor room has floor-to-ceiling wood-paneled walls and built-ins and classical columns that separate the adjacent sunroom. This bright room has views of Long Island City, Brooklyn, and the New York Harbor.
The master suite is on the third floor. It has a dressing room, walk-in closet, en-suite bathroom, and private terrace.
There’s another bedroom on the third floor, as well as two en-suite bathrooms each on the fourth and fifth floors.
The views get even better on the sixth floor, where you’ll find an office with a street-facing terrace and a rear, glass-enclosed sitting room. The floorplan labels the seventh floor as staff quarters, but it could also be another couple of small bedrooms.
In the basement, there’s a 32-foot-long commercial-grade chef’s kitchen. There’s also a sub-basement that has storage space and a wine cellar.
