Roosevelt Island’s colorful Manhattan Park Pool Club is back and open to the public
A playful art installation has returned to Manhattan Park, a waterfront rental on Roosevelt Island. Every summer since 2015, an artist is selected to transform the building’s pool deck with a dazzling 8,500-square-foot mural. This year, as part of a partnership with Corcoran New Developments, Pliskin Architecture, K&Co, and Manhattan Park, artist Alex Proba from Studio Proba designed the sixth annual pop-up mural, with a mix of colorful shapes and forms spread out across the outdoor space.
“2020 is a year like none of us has ever imagined or could have predicted. And we have to say that this project means even more to us now than it would have in any other time. We are super grateful,” Proba wrote on Instagram.
“With every piece of art we release to the world we want to do one thing the most: we want to make you happy, even if it’s only for a second. We truly believe that art and especially murals completely transform an environment — they add life and personality. They make you smile when you see them. They are an emotion for me. Hopefully, this one radiates hope for a better future together.”
Last year, the pool got a makeover from artist Elizabeth Sutton, who used 60 gallons of paint a sunburst with 18 different shades. Designer deck furniture was also selected to complement the installation.
The pool club has officially opened for visitors after postponing the season earlier this summer because of the coronavirus pandemic. Guest passes on weekdays cost $25 for Roosevelt Island residents and $40 for non-residents; on weekends, passes cost $30 for Roosevelt Island residents and $60 for non-residents.
