See the 193 new Rockefeller Center flags designed by the public

The iconic flags that surround the Rink at Rockefeller Center got a makeover over the weekend. Public art initiative “The Flag Project” opened on Saturday with 193 new flags designed by the public, as well as a number of well-known artists and designers. Led by Tishman Speyer, the installation aims to celebrate New York City as the city continues its fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
The new exhibit is the result of a competition that launched in May and asked New Yorkers of all artistic abilities to submit designs for the iconic flags at Rockefeller Center. The winning designs were then produced on an eight-foot by five-foot flag and now will be flown around the Rink from August 1 through August 23.
According to Tishman Speyer, the competition generated more than a thousand responses from around the world. Notable artists who designed a flag for the installation include Jeff Koons, Marina Abramović, Christian Siriano, Sarah Sze, Steve Powers, KAWS, Laurie Anderson, Hank Willis Thomas, Carmen Herrera, Jenny Holzer, Shantell Martin, Sanford Biggers, and Faith Ringgold.

The flags usually represent the 193 nations recognized by the United Nations. They have changed or special occasions, including rainbow flags for Pride and gold and silver flags during the holiday season.
The public can view the Flag Project at any time, no tickets are required. A helpful map of the installation can be found here (pdf), which includes more information on the artists and their designs.
