Everyone’s experience during this current crisis is a little bit different, but the one thing that’s emerged as the great unifier is cooking. From sourdough starters and banana bread to chefs cooking at home on Instagram, we can’t get enough of both trying new recipes ourselves and seeing how the pros do it in their own kitchens. Family Meal, a new e-cookbook from Penguin Random House, combines the best of these comforts, featuring 50 recipes from famous chefs and home cooks. But the best part is that 100 percent of the proceeds will benefit the Restaurant Workers’ Covid-19 Emergency Relief Fund.

Beyond the basics of providing food and drink, restaurants fulfill a human need for connection. They’re a gathering place for family and friends, for first dates and breakups and birthdays and weddings. They’ve been there for us in good times and bad. Now it’s time for us to give back.
The quote above comes from the book release, and it couldn’t be more true. The emergency relief fund that sales are supporting is through the Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation, a nationwide organization that addresses “quality-of-life issues that disproportionately affect restaurant workers.” Funds raised via their COVID-19 fund are allocated 50 percent for direct relief to individual restaurant workers; 25 percent for non-profit organizations serving restaurant workers in crisis; and 25 percent for zero-interest loans for restaurants to get back up and running.
Family Meal is just $5.99, but every dollar helps towards this important effort. Some of the New York City cooks featured include New York Times food columnist and cookbook author Alison Roman, chef and television personality Bobby Flay, and Milk Bar founder Christina Tosi.
