As New Yorkers look to avoid in-person grocery shopping amid the coronavirus pandemic, the demand for delivery services has exploded across the city. Hoping to provide an alternative to the currently overwhelmed system, Hello Alfred, a company that provides a digital personal assistant for city dwellers, has launched a new delivery service for $25 per week for out-of-network users, as Eater NY first reported.
The service, dubbed “Alfred Delivers,” guarantees home delivery weekly, or twice per week, for $25, without any added fees. Customers can order practically anything in addition to groceries, like medication, household items, pet food, and even wine, according to the company. For buildings currently in the Hello Alfred network, which includes about 11,000 apartments in NYC, the service is free.
An assigned personal shopper will “make every stop for one flat fee,” with deliveries coming once per week or more. The shoppers, who are all salaried, will follow precautions from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and wear gloves and masks.
After downloading the Hello Alfred app, users can add items to their weekly order. The total will come to the cost of the items plus 5 percent upon purchase. The additional 5 percent goes into an assistance fund to help Hello Alfred workers.
A spokesperson for the company told Eater that the app has received 10,000 delivery requests in the last month. The coverage area for the app includes all of Manhattan, some neighborhoods in the outer boroughs, and parts of New Jersey and Connecticut.
