Several “well-placed real estate brokers” told the LIC Post that Trader Joe’s is heading to Long Island City, where they signed a lease at the recently completed Court Square condo building 22-43 Jackson Avenue. Expected to open at the end of 2020, this will be the grocery chain’s 11th location in NYC and second in Queens (the other is in Rego Park).

Trader Joe’s opened their original New York City location on 14th Street near Union Square 13 years ago. They’ve since added a second location on 14th and Avenue A, one at Essex Crossing, two on the Upper West Side, in Murray Hill, Soho, Rego Park, Cobble Hill, and at City Point in Downtown Brooklyn.

Construction began on the 11-story, 70-unit condo at 22-43 Jackson Avenue in May 2018. Known as the Prime, it’s expected to open in 2020, along with Trader Joe’s. The location is prime for foot traffic. It’s a quick walk to the 7, G, E, and M trains at Court Square and is next door to the iconic Court Square Diner and down the block from MoMA PS1. Several new residential projects are also nearby, including the massive, 1,000+ unit 5Pointz redevelopment directly across the street and the 802-unit Skyline Tower condo (the tallest building in Queens). In addition, it’s less than two blocks from the 50-story office building One Court Square.

Trader Joe’s declined to comment on the Long Island City lease.
