David Rockwell-designed food hall to open at Manhattan West complex

A new food hall designed by David Rockwell is coming to Manhattan’s West Side. Brookfield Properties announced on Tuesday plans to open a 40,000-square-foot venue at Manhattan West, a six-building development currently under construction that includes space for office, residential, retail, and a hotel between 9th and 10th Avenues. Dubbed “Citizens” and run by hospitality company sbe, the concept includes two full-service restaurants, multiple bars, and a fast-casual market.

Citizens will be located in 5 Manhattan West, a 17-story office building measuring 1.7 million square feet. Whole Foods currently occupies 60,000 square feet on the building’s ground floor. The concept will feature both new and established brands used by sbe, with “fast-casual, full-service food, and mixology brands offering ghost kitchens, a digital marketplace, and global catering,” according to a press release.

“Innovative and of-the-moment culinary offerings are an essential part of a successful placemaking destination, and ‘Citizens’ by sbe will help bring Manhattan West to another level,” Andrew Brent, the vice president of Brookfield Properties, said.

“Hudson Eats at Brookfield Place has been a major success, but we wanted to create something even bigger and bolder at Manhattan West. The marketplace, restaurant, and bar concepts created by sbe will provide elevated culinary experiences for the diverse array of audiences drawn to Manhattan West.”

The Rockwell Group has designed the interiors for many hot spots in New York City and around the world, including Cedric’s at The Shed, the Moxy hotels, Nobu, as well as residential buildings like 15 Hudson Yards. Although the exact vendors sbe will bring to the new food hall are not known yet, the company currently operates two restaurants from José Andrés, as well as other concepts in Miami and Los Angeles.

Upon its completion, Manhattan West, which stretches between 31st and 33rd Streets from 9th to 10th Avenues, will contain six million square feet of office space, 844 residences, a hotel, 200,000 square feet of retail, and a two-acre public plaza. And Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group will open a new restaurant at the complex next year.
