The city released on Thursday designs for the fashion and film production complex planned for the Sunset Park waterfront. The new Made in NY Campus at Bush Terminal in Brooklyn involves the restoration of existing city-owned industrial buildings that will serve as a manufacturing hub for the garment industry, as well as the construction of a 100,000-square-foot media facility. The $136 million development, which will house between 20 and 30 companies from the fashion industry, will open in the spring of 2021.
“The new Made in New York Campus brings exciting opportunities to the Sunset Park community–providing affordable workspace for innovative and sustainable companies while also creating good jobs for local residents,” Jhaelen Hernandez-Eli, the senior vice president of NYCEDC, said in a statement.
Plans to create a complex geared toward the fashion industry first came about in 2017, after rent increases at office space in Manhattan’s Garment District repeatedly forced out companies. The campus in Sunset Park, a neighborhood that has grown to hold the city’s second-largest concentration of garment manufacturers, offers tenants affordable and modern workspace.
In March, the city selected a team of Brooklyn-based architects to transform the nine-acre site. nARCHITECTS and Perkins Eastman are revamping the existing buildings into the “Hub,” while W Architecture and Landscape Architecture are taking on the upgraded public space and streetscape.
“With innovative design that incorporates Bush Terminal’s historical past, we are developing forward-looking, new manufacturing spaces for the Made in NY campus,” Mimi Hoang, the co-founding principal of nARCHITECTS, said.
Last summer, the city said it was seeking proposals to develop a 100,000-square-foot state-of-the-art film and tv production facility with high-ceiling sound stages and support space. The contract awardee for the facility has not been announced yet.
On Thursday, the city issued a request for expressions of interest for “one or more partners to operate a research and development center” in the Hub, that will also involve job training
