Midtown’s Paris Theatre will temporarily reopen for a Netflix screening

In August, Midtown’s 71-year-old Paris Theatre closed its doors when its lease with developer Sheldon Solow ended. The 581-seat theater was NYC’s last single-screen movie house and was known for showing indie and foreign, especially French, films. But the iconic establishment on 58th Street will open its doors once more next month; Deadline reports that Netflix has worked out a deal with Solow to screen its upcoming movie “Marriage Story” in the Paris when it premiers on November 6th.
As 6sqft previously reported, “Solow is currently developing a 19-story condo building next to the Paris Theatre at 7 West 57th Street.” When news about the Paris Theatre first broke, Deadline noted that the developer hoped to open a walk-in medical center or other high-revenue business in the space. But they now question whether Netflix can reach a long-term deal with the Solow family. Netflix would not comment, but the company has had to get creative in its screening options, as major theater chains will not allow movies to play for only a month (the standard for Netflix before titles start streaming). Likewise, they’ll premier their other new movie, Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” in Broadway’s Belasco Theatre, the first time a film will be screened in the 112-year-old theater.
“Marriage Story,” directed by Noah Baumbach and starring Scarlett Johansson-Adam Driver, will premier in Los Angeles and New York at the Paris Theatre on November 6th, followed by a wider release on November 15th before it starts streaming on December 6th.
