Does your child want to ditch the training wheels? Need a new helmet? Head to Prospect Park this weekend for the park’s first annual “Bike Day.” Hosted by the Prospect Park Alliance with Citi Bike and Bike New York, the free event on Sunday, Oct. 20 hopes to encourage a more diverse group of New Yorkers to take up biking by offering demonstrations, classes, prizes, and a one-month free trial of Citi Bike.

Bike New York, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting cycling throughout the five boroughs, will be on hand to provide a skills class for children looking to advance to two-wheels. According to the group, kids will learn how to balance, pedal, start, stop, and steer a bicycle.

After your child has mastered the pedals, make sure to get a free helmet. The Prospect Park Alliance will be providing free, fitted helmets at the event, while supplies last. You can also swap your child’s too-small bikes for a more-fitting model.

Bike New York will be running its Gear Femmes initiative, which aims to encourage more women to take up biking, an activity dominated in the city by white men. In addition to providing information about mentoring programs for women/trans/femme cyclists, Gear Femmes is organizing a ride on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. for women and female-identifying people.

There will be hand-cycle demonstrations for adults with disabilities and tandem cycling for children and adults with special needs, run by InTandem. Get the full line up of events happening on Sunday, Oct. 20 between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m., here.
