Facebook and Apple are battling for office space at Midtown West’s former Farley Post Office

Two major tech companies are vying for office space at the former James A. Farley Post Office in Manhattan. The New York Post reported on Tuesday that Facebook and Apple both want to lease space at the former post office which is being converted by Vornado Realty Trust into a mixed-use site with 740,000 square feet of office space and a new train hall underneath. In September, it was reported that Facebook was in advanced talks for office space, but according to the Post, Apple has “suddenly decided it, too, wants all four floors of Farley’s office space.”
Gov. Andrew Cuomo first announced plans for the Penn Station-Moynihan Train Hall complex in 2016 and construction began a year later. On top of the new train hall, which will service LIRR and Amtrak trains, the former post office building will boast 740,000 square feet of office space and 120,000 square feet of retail. The project is expected to wrap up in 2020.
As the two tech giants compete for the available office space, Facebook may have a slight edge over Apple. Mark Zuckerberg’s company has leased 758,00 square feet of space at a Roth-owned building at 770 Broadway since 2013. And while Apple has better credit, Roth is leaning toward Facebook as a tenant, sources told the Post.
As 6sqft reported in August, Apple has been looking for about 750,000 square feet of office space in Manhattan, including at buildings like 50 Hudson Yards and One Madison Avenue. According to the Post, Apple is also looking at Morgan North, a historic post office being converted into a creative office complex by Tishman Speyer.
