IKEA is coming to Queens. The Swedish furniture store announced on Tuesday plans to open a new location at a shopping center in Rego Park next summer. The store, located in the Rego Center, will be the first in the United States with a new layout, according to the company.
“It’s an exciting time for IKEA as we enter this next phase of our expansion into major cities in the U.S.,” Javier Quiñones, the president and chief sustainability officer for IKEA Retail U.S., said in a press release. “We are passionate about life at home and energized by the opportunity to collaborate with New Yorkers to create a new experience that is both easy to access and shop.”
The Rego Park store will be New York City’s third location, joining stores in Red Hook and more recently, the Upper East Side. The Manhattan store is considered a “planning studio,” which has no actual products to buy in-store, but allows customers to meet with IKEA home planners and order items for delivery.
The 115,000-square-foot store coming to Rego Park will offer full services, including thousands of products for purchase, assembly and installation, and new food to allow for a “taste of Sweden on the go.” Plus, there will be new family-friendly rest areas for children.
Located at the corner of Queens Boulevard and Junction Boulevard, the IKEA will be closest to M and R trains at 63 Drive-Rego Park and Woodhaven Boulevard.
“With a growing community of more than 900,000 households, Queens was a natural next destination for IKEA in New York City,” Leontyne Green Sykes, CEO of IKEA Retail U.S., said. “We know that more than half of Queens’ residents travel via public transportation, and we selected Rego Park for this new store concept to meet the unique needs of this customer.”
