‘Waterfront Planning Camp’ invites New Yorkers to help the city improve 520 miles of NYC waterfront

The Department of City Planning (DCP) on Wednesday invited New Yorkers of all ages to help shape the city’s next Comprehensive Waterfront Plan, starting with a “Waterfront Planning Camp” event on Governors Island. In an effort to get community input and feedback on how to make the city’s 520 miles of waterfront better, the DCP is hosting a free Waterfront Planning Camp on Governors Island at Nolan Park, Saturday, August 17th from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The afternoon of interactive fun will provide a chance to share ideas for the future of the city’s diverse waterfront with information and activities from the serious (go bags, preparedness, and flood insurance) to the sublime (boat tours, bubbles, and ice cream).
Hosted by the Trust for Governors Island and co-sponsored by eco-arts organization Works on Water, the day of brainstorming kicks off a variety of events, planning workshops and online engagement opportunities–coming soon to DCP’s website–to enable people to learn and get involved in this important effort to address critical issues that include climate change, public access and jobs.
DCP director Marisa Lago said in a statement: “New Yorkers love their waterfront and we’re using it more than ever. To make this precious resource even more enjoyable, accessible and resilient, we’re going to the experts–New Yorkers themselves!”
The Comprehensive Waterfront Plan, updated every ten years, will be released in 2020. It aims to make New York City’s 520 miles of waterfront more accessible, active and resilient. In addition to the multiple in-person events to come, ideas are being solicited through an online survey. A public information campaign is currently running on LinkNYC kiosks as well as on DCP’s social media channels, directing visitors to nyc.gov/waterfrontplan.
Ferries (free before noon) run to Governors Island from the Battery Maritime Building in Manhattan and from Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
