New Essex Market officially opens on the Lower East Side next month

Essex Market’s new home on the ground floor of the mega-development Essex Crossing officially opens to the public on May 13. Located across the street from its nearly 80-year-old home, the market is hosting a free event on Saturday, May 18 at 88 Essex Street to celebrate, as Eater NY first reported. The market’s more than 20 existing vendors will make the move across the street, to be joined by 18 new vendors and two restaurants. The old market will officially close its doors on May 5.
According to its Eventbrite page, the opening party features food tastings, live music, vendor-led cooking demonstrations, and programs for kids. Guests will get a free Essex Market tote bag as well as the chance to win other prizes.
At the new location, the market, operated by the city since the 1940s, will have space for community events and talks, as well as a demonstration kitchen. New vendors like the Lower East Side Ice Cream Factory, Samesa, and Heros and Villians will join existing merchants like Porto Rico Importing Co., Pain D’Avignon, La Tiendita, and others.
Developed by the Delancey Street Associates, the Essex Crossing development contains 1.9 million square feet of residential and commercial space across nine sites. The Regal Essex Crossing opened its 14-screen theater earlier this month, and the 26-story rental tower Essex launched leasing in January. The tower sits above the relocated Essex Market, the 700-foot-long Market Line, and the new theater.
