Recently re-branded as the We Company, the juggernaut formerly known as WeWork has introduced Made By We, an “on-demand workspace,” event space, retail shop and cafe at 902 Broadway in the Flatiron district. Manhattan’s largest private office tenant adds the new retail and no-membership-required co-working concept to a growing list of conquests that includes the landmarked Lord & Taylor building which they’ve tapped starchitect Bjarke Ingels to restore and co-living (WeLive) and childhood education (WeGrow) ventures as well as their better-known co-working brand.
The flagship location for the new “town hall” concept will feature an outpost of Australian coffee and cafe chain Bluestone Lane along with a WeWork space where anyone can book one of 96 seats and six meeting rooms on-demand or at the Made by We site for a minimum of 30 minutes ($6), paying for the workspace on an as-needed basis. Everything after 30 minutes is charged at $0.20 per minute.
The company views Made By We as a “reimagined community center” where visitors can get down to business, shop for member-made products or catch a Made By We event. Company partner Julie Rice said (h/t Dezeen) “Everything we do at The We Company, from the spaces we curate to the service offerings we provide, is intended to create meaningful human connections.” We’re not sure why we’d pay 20 cents a minute to work in a Made By We cafe when we can work in a different cafe for free, without a membership, and with coffee–though admittedly the meaningful human connections at the average cafe could use some work–but the flagship location of Made By We opens today at 902 Broadway, and we’re pretty sure it’s free to have a look.
