Beloved independent bookstore McNally Jackson will not be closing its Soho location after all, the Bowery Boogie reported on Wednesday. The good news comes just a few months after the bookseller announced it would have to move out of the neighborhood, its home for the last 14 years, due to a 136 percent rent increase.
Sources, including an employee of McNally Jackson, told Bowery Boogie the mom and pop shop is staying put on Prince Street. As 6sqft reported in October, the owner of the bookstore, Sarah McNally, opened the store in 2004 on Prince Street, a location considered one of the city’s most highly-trafficked.
“I got a call from my landlord saying brokers told him he could get $850,000 for the space and I currently pay $350,000,” McNally told Fox5 NY last year. “I knew the rent should go up–it’s fair for rent to go up. But I was surprised it would more than double.”
Its unclear as of now whether the bookseller’s landlord decided to ditch the rent hike. But it does appear McNally Jackson is doing okay; the store opened a new location last month at LaGuardia Airport and expanded last January to Williamsburg.
