Three new restaurants and possible bank could replace shuttered Union Square Coffee Shop

One of New York City’s beloved late-night spots will be replaced with three new restaurants and possibly a Chase Bank, Eater NY reported. The Coffee Shop, an iconic Union Square diner known for its fashion model customers and appearances on shows like Sex and the City, closed earlier this month. While no leases have been signed, the property manager told Eater three of the four retail spaces available will be reserved for new restaurants.
The Coffee Shop sat on the corner of 16th and Union Square West for nearly 30 years. Run by former Wilhelmina models, the cafe attracted many celebrities and A-listers. Even with its famous clientele, the restaurant had reasonable prices, reliable standby meals, and nearly all-night hours (it was open 23 hours/day).
Co-owner Charles Milite announced the shop’s closure in July. “The times have changed in our industry,” Milite told the New York Post. “The rents are very high and now the minimum wage is going up and we have a huge number of employees.”
A tipster told Jeremiah’s Vanishing New York that the fourth open space will become a Chase bank. According to the source, the bank might retain the classic neon sign and turn the letters to spell Chase instead of Coffee Shop.
