Private seven-acre Connecticut island with a garden wonderland sells for $21.5M
A private island in Long Island Sound known as Rogers Island just got a new owner, who paid $21.5 million for the seven-acre property off the Connecticut coast. The sellers, a couple of “island collectors” by the name of Christine and Edmund Stoecklein, are bound for the West Coast, according to Mansion Global, unloading their gorgeously landscaped land mass and even lovelier Tudor mansion for less than the $22.3 million they paid for it in 2003, to an anonymous buyer.
Located 75 miles from New York City and 19 miles from the Hamptons, the island is part of the Thimbles archipelago. It occupies just over 7.5 acres of land that features a 13,100 square-foot, 10-bedroom main residence, a detached four-bedroom guesthouse, an art studio, an in-ground pool and pool house, a tennis court, a putting green, rolling green lawns, a koi pond, waterfalls, two docks, three beaches and a greenhouse.
The property has been meticulously maintained and preserved over the years that have passed since financier and avid yachtsman Captain John Jay Phelps bought the island in 1902 and renamed it Yon Comis Island, by which it is sometimes known.
The island’s perfectly–and colorfully–restored circa 1902 Tudor home features 18 rooms, all with water views.
This unusual Tudor boasts an eat-in country kitchen with chef-worthy appliances, granite counters, a butler’s pantry, breakfast nook and outdoor patio. In the grand dining room and great room you’ll find a fireplace and French doors leading out to the patio.
The massive master suite also has a fireplace as well as, of course, access to the outdoors with a balcony attached. The master bath has a soaking tub and separate shower. And, of course, there are nine more bedrooms if that one’s not your favorite.
There’s also a yoga/exercise room, a spacious office and a separate stairwell for staff.
Elsewhere on the island is a four-bedroom guest house, a separate art studio, in-ground pool and a fully-equipped pool house.
The Stoeckleins were also responsible for turning the island into what the listing calls a “garden wonderland.” Various wonders include a tennis court, putting green, a tranquil koi pond, lush lawns, rushing waterfalls, two docks, three secluded beaches and a greenhouse.
