New York City is seeking proposals to develop and operate a 200,000-square-foot media production space on the Sunset Park waterfront. The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment and the New York City Economic Development Corporation announced Thursday it is looking to build a state-of-the-art film, television, sound recording or other similar production space at the Made in New York Campus at Bush Terminal. Scheduled to open in 2020, the campus is expected to become a hub for garment, manufacturing and media production.
Development proposals which advance gender equity, diversity and inclusion within the media production industry will be given preference.
“Not only will the Made in NY Campus ensure that TV and filmmakers have more production space and resources, and that more New Yorkers have access to the well-paying production jobs, it will increase gender equity and diversity in this growing industry,” Julie Menin, commissioner of MOME, said in a press release.
Mayor Bill de Blasio first announced in 2017 plans to invest $136 million in Bush Terminal’s transformation. As 6sqft learned last year, the city tapped WXY architecture + urban design to design the complex.
The 36-acre campus currently has 500 workers and will add 1,500 more by 2020. Proposals for the space are due on November 2 and a tour of the site will be offered to interested groups on August 15. Construction could start as early as 2019.
