Summer Streets is back! Starting August 4, New Yorkers can enjoy seven miles of car-free fun along Park Avenue, from Central Park to the Brooklyn Bridge. As part of the Department of Transporation’s 11th annual event, activities will be offered on three Saturdays in August, from 7 am to 1 pm. While there’s sadly not a dishwasher-looking waterslide this year, there will be a 165-foot-long, 30-foot-high zip line, fun hand-cycles to test out, and an eight-foot-tall bouldering wall.

Since 2008, DOT has hosted the summer event and last year, according to the agency, more than 300,000 people attended. “This year’s Summer Streets activations will allow New Yorkers to see their streets in new and exciting ways,” Polly Trottenberg, commissioner of DOT, said. “We encourage everyone to get out this year – and enjoy what has become over the last decade one of the great traditions of a New York summer.”
The seven-mile event features five separate “rest stops:” Uptown at 51st Street, Midtown at 25th Street, Astor Place at Astor and Lafayette, Soho at Spring Street and Foley Square at Duane and Centre Street. The theme of this year’s Summer Streets is “unexpected moments.”
Highlights of the event include:
- Mountain bike park from Clif Kids Park and obstacle course from Brooklyn Boulders
- A 165-foot-long zip line
- Free samples of treats from Nuun, Krave Jerky, Skinny Pop and Purity Organics
- Art & cultural workshops from institutions like the Brooklyn’s Children’s Museum, El Museo del Barrio, New York Botanical Garden, the Museum of Art and Design and more
- Live performances from the Tai Chi Society, Gibney Dance, The Afro-Latineers, Dayboat Brass Quartet and more
- Municipal Art Society walking tours along Park Avenue with art and architectural historians
- Free bike rentals from Bike & Roll

- And much more!
