Get ready to party on Governors Island this summer. The Trust for Governors Island on Tuesday announced extended hours for the 2018 season from 6 pm to 10 pm, allowing visitors to explore the park, drink cocktails and enjoy beautiful sunsets every Friday beginning May 25. During “Late Friday” nights, guests will be able to traverse the entire Island, including the promenade and Nolan Park and Colonels Row homes in the park’s historic district.
The Island Oyster restaurant sits on the water near the ferry landing
The park’s waterfront restaurant, Island Oyster, will also remain open until 10 pm, serving up tropically inspired cocktails and casual summer fare. Find tacos and cocktails on the Eastern side of the ferry landing at Taco Beach, lots of brews at Liggett Terrace and sweets at Blue Marble Ice Cream.
“There is nothing like a beautiful summer night in New York City,” Alicia Glen, deputy mayor for housing and economic development, said. “Now thousands of us will be able to enjoy that magic from Governors Island.”
Fridays beginning Memorial Day Weekend until September 14, ferries will run from the Battery Maritime in Lower Manhattan, departing at 5:30, 6:30 and 7: 30 pm. Ferries departing Governors Island leave at 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 pm.
The Island’s six-month season kicks off on Tuesday, May 1 and remains open daily through October 31. For the first week of the season, ferries from Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge Park to the Island will be free for all visitors. Don’t miss events like Holi Hai, a classical contemporary music festival, 5K run, prohibition-era themed jazz party and much more. Check out the calendar of events happening on Governors Island here.
