Manhattan’s first-ever Wegmans grocery store is opening this year. Located at Vornado Realty Trust’s 770 Broadway in the East Village, the grocery store chain, beloved for its prepared food options and affordable prices, will replace the Kmart on Astor Place, which closed in 2021. In addition to its usual offerings, the store will feature a 94-seat seafood restaurant with an oyster counter and a 10-seat sushi bar, as first reported by Eater New York. The store is expected to open during the second half of 2023.

Wegmans will occupy approximately 82,000 square feet of 770 Broadway, under the terms of a 30-year lease. The building occupies a full city block, spanning between 8th and 9th Streets and Broadway and Fourth Avenue.
Wegmans opened their first-ever New York City location at 21 Flushing Avenue in the Brooklyn Navy Yard in October 2019. On its opening day, more than 25,000 shoppers flocked to the store, breaking Wegman’s record for opening-day sales.
“We are so excited to bring Wegmans to Manhattan. This is something we’ve been dreaming about and working toward for a long time,” Colleen Wegman, president and CEO of Wegmans Food Markets, said.
“The community’s response to the opening of our Brooklyn store had an excitement and energy that you can only experience in New York City. You can feel that energy returning to the city, and we are thrilled to be a part of it.”
Founded in Rochester in 1916, Wegmans has 109 stores throughout the eastern United States, with 48 stores in New York State alone.
In July 2021, Vornado Realty Trust first announced that they would be bringing in Wegmans as the new tenant at the former Kmart on Astor Place. The store abruptly closed after 25 years of business much to the dismay of local residents.
