First look at the 2017 Open House New York sites!
If you love architecture and urban design from historic to contemporary, there has never been a better time to join Open House New York for a rare weekend of access to typically off limits sites. Celebrating its 15th anniversary, this year’s OHNY will take place on Saturday, October 14 and Sunday, October 15, opening up more than 200 buildings and projects across the five boroughs for tours and talks with architects, urban planners, preservationists, and city leaders. OHNY has just released a sneak preview of the program, which includes a tour of SHoP Architects’ American Copper Buildings and their iconic skybridge, a peek inside the artifacts and archival gems at the New York Transit Museum Archives, the Bridge at Cornell Tech at the university’s new Roosevelt Island Campus, and the new global headquarters of West Elm.
Since the first Open House New York Weekend in 2003, buildings and sites throughout all five boroughs have opened their doors to the public; last year visitors toured the architecturally stunning Bjarke Ingels-designed Via 57 West; previous years’ tours included a rare chance to explore Eero Saarinen’s TWA Flight Center at JFK airport.
Highlights of 2017 Open House New York include:
- The American Copper Buildings
- Access to the New York Transit Museum Archives
- The Bridge at Cornell Tech, a contemporary research and development incubator designed by Weiss/Manfredi at the university’s new Roosevelt Island Campus
- Waterside Plaza, the East River-side apartment complex inspired by the work of Louis Kahn, including historic construction photos
- Residences at PS 186 and Boys & Girls Club of Harlem, an adaptive reuse project by Dattner Architects that transforms an abandoned public school into a new Boys & Girls Club and affordable housing
- Sims Sunset Park Material Recovery Facility with Selldorf Architects
- Urban Post-Disaster Housing Prototype with Garrison Architects
- The Gerken Residence with Young Projects
- The Fool’s Gold Records store with Family New York
- Kingsland Wildflower Green Roof Garden in Greenpoint, Brooklyn
- New York Marble Cemetery in the East Village, Manhattan
- Alice Austen House in Rosebank, Staten Island
- Socrates Sculpture Park in Astoria, Queens
- The Hindu Temple Society of North America in Flushing, Queens
- Masonic Hall in the Flatiron District, Manhattan
- Little Red Lighthouse in Washington Heights, Manhattan

- Wyckoff House Museum in East Flatbush, Brooklyn

The full calendar will be released on October 5. Important dates and events include a special ticketed 15th-anniversary launch party/spring benefit at Jane’s Carousel. Most OHNY Weekend sites can be visited free of charge during open hours; some sites and tours require advance reservations and charge a fee of $5 per person.
To celebrate the 15th anniversary of OHNY Weekend, the non-profit organization behind the festival will be publishing a book featuring the winners of the annual OHNY photo competition. The book will be available via Kickstarter and will feature a minimum of a hundred images of the festival captured by a diverse group of amateur and pro photographers and book design by creative agency PS New York.
