EVENT: Explore the art and architecture of the Second Avenue Subway with a 6sqft editor
As we approach the one-year anniversary of the Second Avenue Subway’s long-awaited opening, it’s the perfect time to step back and marvel at the $4 billion infrastructure project. Join 6sqft senior editor Dana Schulz for a tour with the Municipal Art Society about the history, art, and architecture of the Second Avenue Subway. Taking place on Saturday, September 16th, the two-hour event will explore why it took nearly 100 years for the train’s wheels to get rolling, how it was designed, and what engineering feats set it apart. Guests will also view the impressive collection of public art from Chuck Close, Sarah Sze, Vik Muniz, and Jean Shin, learning about these contemporary artists and the significance of their work.
The Municipal Art Society has worked for nearly 125 years as a non-profit advocacy organization dedicated to thoughtful planning and urban design, historic preservation, and the betterment of city neighborhoods. One of the biggest ways they achieve these goals is through their robust tour program. Each week, a well-established group of guides leads New Yorkers on educational explorations from City Island to the Bowery, covering themes such as Art Deco architecture, mom-and-pop storefronts, and social and cultural history.
“The Art of the Second Avenue Subway” will not only walk through the four new stations’ beautiful new mosaics, but it will put in context just how significant this project is to NYC’s history and future. As 6sqft reported in May, after just five months, the line’s average weekday ridership was up from 140,000 to 176,000 passengers, an increase that prompted the MTA to add two additional train trips during rush hour come this November.
The tour runs from 11am to 1pm on Saturday, September 16th. Tickets cost $20 for MAS members and $30 for non-members. Limited spots are available; reserve yours here >>
