The East Coast versus West Coast rivalry may be slowly fading away. New Yorkers are making the cross-country leap from New York City to Los Angeles at a higher rate, in pursuit of cheaper rents, blossoming creative communities and, of course, all of that sunshine. According to LA Weekly, a new report by LinkedIn shows NYC as the top out-of-state feeder for LA transplants. For every 10,000 Angelenos on LinkedIn, about 7.3 of them just moved there from the Big Apple.

For every 10,000 LinkedIn users in NYC, just 4.1 recently moved from Los Angeles. In addition to the year-round warm weather, LA’s economy appears to be doing well, surpassing the United Kingdom as the fifth largest economy in the world this year. LinkedIn’s economist, Guy Berger, told LA Weekly: “A few years ago the New York economy was doing better, but that’s not the case anymore. LA’s economy is doing well and it has probably become more attractive.”

While the infrastructure of the two cities differs drastically (The sprawling, traffic-congested and inadequate public transit system setup of LA frightens some New Yorkers), commonalities do exist. As 6sqft previously covered, neighborhoods like Los Feliz, Echo Park, Venice Beach and Silver Lake give off a Lower East Side or Brooklyn vibe, with art galleries, fair trade coffee shops and quirky hipster stores. Like BK, these LA hoods have attracted groups of artistic people that want to collaborate and create at perhaps a slower pace.

Although it may be difficult for proud New Yorkers to admit, Los Angeles definitely has its obvious perks (Did we mention the weather?). And maybe after dealing with the subway’s summer of hell, more will want to sit in LA’s infamous traffic jams in an air-conditioned car instead.
