Art Nerd NY’s top art, architecture, and design event picks – 7/6-7/12

July 6, 2017

Art Nerd New York founder Lori Zimmer shares her top art, design and architecture event picks for 6sqft readers!

Times Square is offering up some pretty cool art experiences this week including a late-night 3D movie and vintage telephone booths that have been repurposed to play stories from immigrants to our great city. The High Line is holding a live chess tournament where pieces are swapped out for visitors, and Chesterfield Gallery hosts a group of artists who have swapped paint for textiles. Photographs celebrating the “limitless beauty of blackness” opens at Brilliant Champions, and artist Andrea Fraser gives a free lunchtime talk at SVA. If you’re out in the Hamptons, take some art with your beach time at Market Art + Design, and finally, rumor has it that the Kosciuszko Bridge will finally be imploded.

Sun Xun’s Time Spy, July Midnight Moment ↑
Times Square Screens
Every night in July, 11:57pm-Midnight

This month’s Midnight Moment takes it to another dimension–the 3rd dimension! In Time Spy, a violin with wings flies through a sky filled with spinning moons, while rotating machinery gives way to strange landscapes and pressure valves. Free 3D glasses will be distributed every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for passersby to view the animated film in three dimensions.

Aman Mojadidi, Once Upon a Place ↑
Duffy Square (46th Street and 7th Avenue)
Through September 5th

The voice of immigrants comes alive in this interactive installation. Visitors are invited to open the doors of three repurposed telephone booths, pick up the receiver, and listen to oral histories of immigration from the newest New Yorkers. They can also open the phone book inside each booth to read more about the storytellers’ communities both here in New York and the countries they have traveled from, and to leave behind a part of their own story if they wish. The installation will include 70 different stories that will last anywhere between two and 15 minutes.

Darren Bader, “chess: relatives:” Pick-Up Game ↑
The High Line at 13th Street
Thursday, July 6, 5:00-7:00pm

Artist Darren Bader mixes art and a game of smarts for his High Line commission. For Bader’s game, traditional chess pieces are replaced by people, making for a fun, interactive game of chess.

The Queens Chamber of Commerce is being secretive about the details, but the epic implosion of the rickety Kosciuszko Bridge is rumored to happen today. Their Facebook page says 3pm, but experts think it could be done during the early morning hours in order to deter big crowds of people who like to see things blown up.
