+POOL team is evaluating 11 different locations for its floating pool concept
A floating pool with its own river-cleaning filtration system is coming to New York City, but it has yet to find a home. The $20 million +POOL project was first announced in 2010 and originally was meant to open by this summer. However, as DNAInfo reported, the team is still working with the city to find a site for its plus-shaped swimming pool that will include four pools in one; a kiddie pool, sports pool, lap pool and a lounge pool. The pool is designed to filter the river that it floats in through the walls of the pool, allowing New Yorkers to take a dip in river water.
The designers behind +POOL conducted a site feasibility study at 11 spots including Brooklyn Bridge Park, Bush Terminal Park, Domino Sugar Factory, Governors Island, Hallet’s Cove, Hudson River Park, Hunters Point, St. George, Transmitter Park and Two Bridges. The project’s deputy director Kara Meyer told DNAInfo: “Currently, we’re building community and talking to officials, parks advocates, property owners, and the many other site stakeholders for Plus POOL.”
+POOL has studied the water quality across the city and has begun the patenting process for its filtration concept that would filter polluted water. While many communities have sought a public pool for years, the complex land access and permitting laws make it complicated.
The team behind the project includes Oana Stanescu, Dong-Ping Wong and Cass Nakashima of Family NY, Archie Lee Coates IV and Jeff Franklin of Playlab. In April, the group partnered with the Heineken-sponsored “The Cities Project,” which will donate $100,000 if 100,000 pledges are made on the SwimInTheRiver.com site. In August, Heineken will provide support to underwrite the public artwork +POOL plans for a light installation scaled to the size of the future pool, which will provide a visible representation.
