MODOS streamlines modular block furniture with modern design and efficiency
Lego-inspired furniture systems are huge right now, and MODOS may have taken the most modern and minimal approach to the trend. Other modular systems, like Muebloc and EverBlock, are made of “blocks” that easily fit together and mimic the childhood toy in both form and function, but MODOS uses only two components–the small brushed metal connector and streamlined slabs of wood–in its tool-free assembly of desks, shelves, stools, and more.
The company’s two designers that worked on MODOS, Matt Tyson and Andrew Personette, put a lot of stock into creating high-quality flat packed furniture that can be easily shipped, which in their opinion is difficult to come by.
In addition to the environmental benefits of flat-packing, the wood used is FSC-certified and formaldehyde-free. The panels are made from a three-quarter-inch-thick plywood with solid birch and alder veneer cores and are available pre-finished in both maple and walnut veneers.
“We designed the connectors to friction fit with the boards. By inserting a ¾” board into the connector, the aluminum is forced to flex and compress on the neighboring board, further increasing the friction. The properties of the hexagon forms reinforce each other, creating inherently strong structures,” explained the designers of the science behind the construction.
The company recently ran a successful Kickstarter campaign and is now in the process of ramping up their manufacturing. Learn more about MODOS on their website.
