Architecture & Design Film Festival brings top documentaries from around the world to NYC

The Architecture & Design Film Festival was founded in 2009 to celebrate the creative universe of architecture and design. The event has grown into the world’s largest annual film festival devoted to the subject, bringing a curated selection of films, events, and panel discussions to cities around the world, to the delight of all who are excited about architecture and design. ADFF New York is in town from September 25 through 28 to kick off the festival’s 16th season. This year brings a full slate of excellent documentaries in a carefully selected program that focuses on sustainability, culture, and the power of personal and public space.
This year’s film festival screenings will be held at the Village East by Angelica. Highlights include five world premieres, seven US premiers, and two NYC premieres. In attendance will be an international collection of filmmakers and notable and innovative architects, designers, and industry influencers. The program will also include speakers and other events.
Among this year’s documentary offerings are an opening night premiere of “Stardust: The Story of Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown,” and films about luminaries such as Carlo Scarpa, Eileen Gray, Rudolph Schindler, Thom Mayne, Robin Donaldson, Winy Maas of MVRVD, Laurie Olin, and more. Topics will include housing, gentrification, biomimicry, and modernism. The closing night film will be a soon-to-be-announced US premiere.
“Every year, I feel so proud of the films included in the festival. We curate them from hundreds of serious films submitted from around the world, and it is always hard to make the final selection,” ADFF Founder and Director, Kyle Bergman, said in a statement.
“I love stepping back to reflect on the common themes that rise to the surface and the powerful ways that film and architecture come together to tell a story. I feel particularly excited about our upcoming 2024-2025 season as it features strong female protagonists and filmmakers, alongside thought-provoking films addressing housing, gentrification, urbanism, and environmental concerns.”
