Brooklyn Public Library begins next phase of Central branch renovation led by Toshiko Mori

Brooklyn Public Library on Thursday kicked off the next phase of the major renovation of its main branch. Led by renowned architect Toshiko Mori, the project at the Central Library includes an updated adult learning center, a new teen center, a restored collections area, and a renovated children’s center. The first phase of the renovation, which wrapped up in 2021, added more light-filled, publicly accessible spaces, and a modernized career center.
The improved adult learning center will feature dedicated collections, a state-of-the-art computer lab, a seminar room, and flexible gathering spaces. The library’s adult learning centers provide free educational programs taught by professional instructors and tutors.
The teen center will feature expanded collections, a study area, a Tech Center, recording pods for music and podcasts, and a gaming center.
The renovation restores the collection areas and renovates the children’s center with new playful gathering spots, interactive shelving displays, a technology center, and reading nooks.
The library will stay open during the project, which will be completed by 2027. The total renovation cost is $150 million, raised from private donations and city and state funding.
“With new and expanded spaces for children, teens, and adult learners, the renovation of Central Library is an investment in the borough’s future,” Linda E. Johnson, President and CEO of Brooklyn Public Library, said.
“Thanks to Toshiko Mori, the building’s new design will both preserve the original Art Deco architecture and increase available public space, providing generations of Brooklynites more inspiring reading nooks, classrooms, and community spaces.”
Down the road, the library hopes to repurpose lower-level storage areas for public use and connect the branch to adjacent Mount Prospect Park through an “elevated outdoor reading garden,” according to a press release. Any future plans will be presented to the community; the library continues to raise money for the final stages.
The Central Library renovation is one of several branch redevelopments, with one-third of BPL branches rebuilt or fully renovated.
