New York City’s favorite discount department store is back. Century 21 on Tuesday officially reopened its flagship at 22 Cortlandt Street in the Financial District three years after filing for bankruptcy and closing all of its locations. The renovated store has four floors with men’s, women’s, and children’s apparel, including footwear, outerwear, handbags, accessories, and fragrances. To honor its connection to the city, the famed store has added “NYC” to its logo.

The store’s grand re-opening event featured a Wheels of Deals prize wheel, fashion illustrations, a runway-inspired photo booth, and an appearance by Mayor Eric Adams himself, according to CBS News. The mayor praised employees for helping shoppers find the items they were looking for.
“You’re the difference maker if someone landed an interview. You’re the difference between how someone that is getting married felt when they walked down the aisle,” Adams said, according to CBS News. “We’re so happy that you’re here.”
Century 21 filed for bankruptcy in September 2020 and announced it would be closing all of its stores permanently, as reported by the New York Post. The shopping chain blamed insurance companies for its misfortune, claiming that the bankruptcy filing was due to Century 21’s insurers turning their backs on them at the “most critical time.”
Last May, Century 21 announced it would reopen its flagship store following a major renovation. The department store revealed that they would be partnering with global premium experiences company Legends to create a “revitalized shopping experience” for the store’s customers both in-person and online.
