To reach more New Yorkers, Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday launched a multi-platform awareness campaign to encourage everyone to stay home during the coronavirus pandemic. With help from Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez, the governor’s new social media push asks New Yorkers to use the hashtag #IStayHomeFor and nominate friends to participate.

“We will only be effective if social distancing is enforced and maintained,” Cuomo said in a press release. “That’s why we are using every tool at our disposable to reach everyone, everywhere in every way — particularly communities we don’t normally reach — to reinforce the message to stay home and stop the spread, if not for ourselves, for the vulnerable people we love around us.”

On his account, the governor shared a photo of him with his mother, Matilda Cuomo. “The best way to stop the spread of COVID-19 is to stay home. It will save lives and protect those we love,” the caption reads. Cuomo nominated J-Lo and Arod, Yankees player Giancarlo Stanton, and Latin pop singer Romeo Santos to participate in the #IStayHomeFor challenge.

The state is also working with Snapchat to spread the stay home message through its platform to launch new New York-inspired filters. Cuomo also recently created his own Snapchat account (nygov) to reach more young people across the state.

Other outreach efforts include a nightly email newsletter with updates, public service announcements on television and radio, highway signs and billboards that read “Stay Home, Save Lives,” and social media graphics to reinforce social distancing.

For those without social media or a smartphone, the administration created the “Go Paper” campaign that partners with FreshDirect to print flyers about social distancing and include them with delivery orders.
