John F. Kennedy International Airport has unveiled the lineup of vendors for its new $4.2 billion Terminal 6. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) and JFK Millennium Partners (JMP) revealed their initial roster of 12 local and diverse businesses, including four from southeast Queens, that will operate within the airport’s new Terminal 6. The chosen food vendors, which include famous NYC eateries like David Chang’s Fuku and Brooklyn’s Di Fara Pizza, will offer an “authentic taste of New York,” while other businesses will co-manage parts of the terminal as joint venture partners.
Terminal 6 is one part of PANYNJ’s broader $19 billion revitalization project aimed at transforming JFK Airport into a “world-class gateway.” In collaboration with the JFK Redevelopment Community Advisory Council, PANYNJ and JMP are focused on ensuring the new airport creates opportunities for the surrounding communities.
The council, PANYNJ, and JMP have undertaken several initiatives to boost local business involvement, including the creation of the Institute of Concessions (IOC). Founded in 2013, the IOC provides training and mentorship to help local businesses develop the skills required to operate at the new JFK Airport.
Terminal 6’s concessions program is expected to have over 35 percent participation from companies certified as Airport Concessions Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (ACDBE). PANYNJ has set a minimum requirement of 30 percent ACDBE participation for the program.
Vendors can participate in the program in one of two ways: as a concessions operator or as a joint venture partner that co-owns a percentage of the business.
The selected joint venture partners for Terminal 6 include Baked Cravings, Neir’s Tavern, Tsion CafĂ©, the Nourish Spot, Sullivan-Hernandez Group, Samantha Alexis Consulting, and Kellee Communications.
Local restaurants in Terminal 6 include Di Fara Pizza and Alidoro Cafe in partnership with M&R Concessions, and BKLYN Blend, Fuku, and Hanoi House, in partnership with Olympic Supply.
JMP is preparing to launch its next phase of concessions procurement in the fall, which will open up opportunities for more small, local businesses to be involved in Terminal 6.
“From the outset of the $19 billion transformation of JFK International Airport, our goal has been to create an airport that is among the best in the world, with a customer experience that is world-class,” PANYNJ Executive Director Rick Cotton said.
“By incorporating diverse, high-quality local businesses alongside national brands at JFK’s terminals, we are creating a unique New York sense of place that will hugely enhance travelers’ airport experience, while generating real and significant economic opportunities for communities neighboring the airport.”
In addition to New York flavors, the airport terminal will also flaunt the work of New York artists. As 6sqft reported in July, commissioned work by artists, at least 10 from New York City, will include sculptures, suspended installations, wallworks, and glass mosaic floor medallions.
The final phase of the $19 billion “JFK Vision Plan”, unveiled in January 2017, is the $9.5 billion New Terminal One (NTO). Revealed by Gov. Kathy Hochul in December 2021, the all-international terminal is being designed and constructed by AECOM Tishman and Gensler
In March, PANYNJ, NTO, and Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield Airports announced the launch of the commercial program for NTO, seeking local, minority vendors that embody the spirit of NYC.
Other projects connected to the “JFK Vision Plan” include the $1.5 billion expansion of Terminal 4 led by Delta and JFK, and a $425 million expansion of Terminal 8, led by American Airlines.
