Hilary Swank’s stunning former townhouse in the West Village sells for $9.8M

The four-story West Village townhouse once owned by actress Hilary Swank has sold for $9.794 million. The historic home at 33 Charles Street has been renovated with modern elements while original details–including restored woodwork and built-ins–still shine. The current owner, former president of Macy’s Harry A. Lawton III, put the property on the market earlier this year for just under $11 million.

The townhouse was built in 1899 and designated as part of the Greenwich Village Historic District in 1969. Swank, with her then-husband Chad Lowe, first picked up the pad in 2002 for $3.9 million and sold it four years later for $8.25 million. Lawton paid $10.5 million for the Charles Street townhouse in 2017.

A formal living room with 11-foot ceiling and large south-facing windows can be found on the parlor floor. Through a stunning archway, there’s a library with built-in bookshelves and a gas fireplace. Dramatic steel casement doors open onto a spacious terrace with a staircase that leads directly to the garden.

The garden level is home to a dining room and eat-in kitchen that is decked out with custom cabinetry and stainless steel appliances. Perfect for party-throwers, the space has two ovens, a Sub-Zero fridge, and two Bosch dishwashers.

A wall of floor to ceiling windows leads out to the ivy-filled garden, which has enough space for plenty of guests to lounge and dine al fresco.

The master suite, boasting a new gas fireplace and enormous walk-in closet, takes up the entire third floor. Another fireplace can be found in the spa-like bath, which has a soaking tub and a separate shower.

Two more bedrooms, a guest suite, and a full bathroom are located on the fourth and top level of the townhouse. Plus, a finished basement boasts a temperature-controlled wine cellar, laundry room, home gym, and always-need extra storage.
