Macy’s 4th of July fireworks show will return to the Hudson River
The Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks are returning to the Hudson River for the first time in over a decade. Hosted over the East River since 2014, the annual fireworks show will switch to the west side for the 2024 event, Macy’s announced Tuesday. The best spots to take in the extravaganza will be between West 14th and West 34th Streets and along the north New Jersey waterfront.
Macy’s Studios is working alongside Pyro Spectaculars by Souza to produce this year’s spectacle, which will feature shells in an array of colors and shapes, synched up to a musical score played alongside live performances.
“This year’s Macy’s 4th of Fireworks display will launch an inspiring spectacle of patriotic color, light and sound from the Hudson River for the first time in more than a decade. Marking the nation’s largest Independence Day celebration, the display will offer a showstopping and high-flying salute to the nation,” Will Coss, executive producer of Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks said.
“Each year the talented artisans and specialists at Macy’s Studios work alongside our partners at Pyro Spectaculars by Souza to find creative and innovative ways to paint the night sky and awe our live spectators and viewers from around the country on NBC. Following last year’s first-of-its-kind drone display, our team has been hard at work developing new ways to surprise and delight our fans.”
The Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks show has been a beloved New York City tradition since 1976. The show was hosted on the East River for decades but relocated to the Hudson River in 2009 in celebration of explorer Henry Hudson’s arrival in New York.
What was supposed to be a one-time change ended up extending for four more years through the 404th anniversary, according to ABC7 New York. However, outcry from residents of NYC’s outer boroughs led to former Mayor Bill de Blasio relocating the fireworks to the East River when he took office in 2014.
Additional information on the fireworks show will be announced in the coming weeks.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy commended Macy’s move to the Hudson.
“New Jersey is proud to celebrate Independence Day this year with a dazzling display of fireworks planned in collaboration with our neighbors across the Hudson,” Murphy said in a statement.
“For the first time in recent years, Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks will light up our sky above the Hudson River. We are excited to work with Mayor Adams and Macy’s to view the country’s largest Independence Day celebration from our backyard as we commemorate 248 years of nationhood.”

When I was growing up the Macy’s fireworks was always on the Hudson and further uptown. I used to watch them from Grant’s tomb at Riverside Park. Sometime in the early 1960’s, the firework barge caught on fire and several workers were killed. Decades later, when Macy’s finally resumed the firework show, it was on the East river. It is nice to see it back on the Hudson.
