The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is spreading holiday cheer across the tri-state region, offering commuters a festive way to ride the rails. The transit agency on Friday introduced the first-ever Holiday Lights Train on the Metro-North, operating on random rotation on the Hudson Line, Harlem Line, and New Haven Line at all times through the New Year. The festive trains are decked out with colorful exterior lights and play special holiday-themed safety messages at select stations.
The trains run between Grand Central Terminal and Croton-Harmon on the Hudson Line, between Grand Central and Southeast on the Harlem Line, and between Grand Central and New Haven on the New Haven Line.
“We wanted to create something special for our community and bring back the sense of wonder, especially for children, and for children of all ages,” Metro-North Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer Justin Vonashek said.Â
“It’s a way for us to connect with our passengers and create lasting memories during this festive time of year when days are short and darkness is long. We hope these colorful lights spark excitement and a sense of holiday cheer for all who come aboard and who see the train pass by.”
The MTA’s festive cheer carries over onto the city’s subway system, where the transit agency’s beloved Holiday Nostalgia Rides returned this weekend. Passengers can hop aboard eight vintage NYC subway cars, dating from the 1930s to the late 1970s, every Sunday in December.
