Here’s a chance to hang an authentic piece of New York City on your wall. On Monday, the city’s Department of Transportation launched the first monthly “sign drops,” selling limited-edition, hand-made street signs from iconic corridors across the five boroughs. To celebrate the start of Pride Month, the first batch of signs featured Christopher Street/Stonewall Place and hit the NYC CityStore for $75 each. The signs sold out in under three hours, according to Gothamist.

The signs are made at DOT’s Sign Shop in Maspeth, Queens, which manufactures more than 70,000 signs annually. The signs are hand-made by a team of 32 employees, who craft various street, highway, directional, and parking signs. Currently, there are over two million NYC DOT signs in use across NYC’s 6,000 miles of streets.

“LGBT@DOT is thrilled to be part of this celebration, emphasizing the importance of Pride Month and the historical significance of the 1969 Stonewall protests. We are glad that DOT is playing its part in commemorating this important historic event. Stonewall Place is a testament to the enduring spirit and strength of the LGBTQ+ community in New York City,” DOT LGBTQ Employee Resource Group co-chairs Esau Reyes-Pesante and Sarah Feller said.

“We are proud to see our city’s history and the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community recognized in such a meaningful and tangible way. These signs serve as a powerful reminder of the progress we’ve made and the work that remains in achieving full equality for the LGBTQ+ community.”

Future sign drops will honor other famous NYC streets, as well as famous New Yorkers, celebrations of special occasions, and other custom releases, according to a press release.

“Now you can own an official piece of New York City: authentic commemorative street signs hand-made by DOT. Our monthly sign drops will allow all who love New York City to celebrate the people, places, and special occasions that make this the greatest city in the world,” Rodriguez said.

All sign drops will be sold on the CityStore, the official store of NYC, with proceeds benefitting the city’s general fund.
