A new mixed-use development in Inwood that will house New York City’s first-ever Dominican arts and cultural center and more than 600 apartments has launched an affordable housing lottery. Located at 375 West 207th Street, the 30-story building will house a museum and exhibition space dedicated to showcasing and preserving the vibrant arts and culture of the Dominican Republic. New Yorkers earning 30, 50, 70, and 110 percent of the area median income can apply for the units, priced from $555/month studios to $2,592/month two bedrooms.
Developed by Joy Construction Corporation and Maddd Equities, and designed by Aufgang Architects, the building—dubbed North Cove—features 611 apartments, according to Yimby.
In August, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced $12.5 million in funding to help establish the Dominican Center for the Arts and Culture at 375 West 207th Street. The facility will feature a museum and exhibition space featuring Dominican artists, a theater space, a children’s library, and an oral history and archives project preserving the cultural history of Inwood and Washington Heights—the most populous Dominican neighborhoods in the country.
Led by the Dominican Studies Institute (DSI) and the City College of New York (CUNY), the facility will be New York’s first cultural center devoted to preserving and celebrating the arts and culture of the Dominican Republic, including New Yorkers of Dominican descent.
The children’s library, managed by a New York Public Library branch in collaboration with DSI’s Dominican Library, will focus on “the preservation of the Spanish language,” according to a press release.
The new facility will sit across the street from The People’s Theatre: Centro Cultural Immigrante, a performing arts and research center in Inwood dedicated to immigrants and the immigrant experience that broke ground in October 2023.
The center, located within the mixed-use development at 405-407 West 206th Street, will serve as the permanent home for the People’s Theatre Project, which produces original theater created by immigrants and artists of color.
Joy Construction Co. and Maddd Equities secured $288 million in financing to complete the project in February, as reported by Yimby.
Amenities include an on-site resident super, indoor and outdoor recreation areas, an elevator, a gym, bike storage, and free Wi-Fi. Units are equipped with high-end vinyl tile, Caesarstone countertops, and white appliances.
Residents will also have easy access to Inwood and Fort Tryon Parks, as well as an adjacent waterfront park.
Nearby public transit options include the 1 and A subway lines, the M100 and Bx12 buses, and the Metro-North Railroad at the University Heights station.
Qualifying New Yorkers can apply for the apartments until February 11, 2024. Complete details on how to apply are available here. Preference for 20 percent of the units will be given to residents of Manhattan Community Board 12.
