As one of the highlights of this year’s Archtober celebration of the built environment, Pumpkitecture 2018 saw 20 of NYC’s top architecture firms once again go gourd to gourd to compete for the Pritzkerpumpkin. Alloy: Firm members created a jack-in-the-box jack-o-lantern, exploring notions of visibility and presence while emanating sinister smoke plumes.

The People’s Pumpkin /A Pathetic Consolation: Pretentioulicious
SITU: SitooOOoooOOOoooOo scared everybody with dehydrated pumpkin strands altered in two phases using a microwave, followed by a heat machine and later formed into a nest-like structure inspired by Newton’s Cenotaph.

A Pathetic Consolation: Hell Tech
Ennead Architects: Jack-o-Tects took home the Hell Tech prize for their hellish, Hellraiser-esque automated drawing machine.

Rafael Viñoly Architects: rough-hell sin-ñoly architects took home the Miserable Mess prize for A Risk in Resin, their valiant (but unsuccessful) attempt to create a resin-cast pumpkin.

Practice for Architecture and Urbanism | PAU: Practice for Anarchy and Upheavel | OW recited sweet poetry in honor of Di-vine, their ode to the life-giving pumpkin vine.

Davis Brody Bond: Demons Bones Blood took home the Most Profound prize for Atlas Hugged, a humble call, in pumpkin form, for global tolerance and acceptance.
