World-renowned plaster artist Jan Hooss has installed a custom stucco art installation in the lobby of 180 East 88th Street, a new condo tower designed by Joe McMillan’s DDG. Inspired by an architectural style widely used on the Upper East Side at the beginning of the 20th century, the art piece “fuses a rococo design with a whimsically modern aesthetic,” according to a press release. The stucco sculpture sits above the vaulted lobby’s fireplace, contrasting its flowing, water-like quality with the fire below.

The 50-story condo tower is the tallest building on the Upper East Side. Inside, there are 46 luxury residences and an incredible set of amenities across eight floors. The structure’s unique facade consists of laid textured Kolumba brick and is highlighted by nine-foot-by-nine-foot windows and concrete arches at its base, middle, and crown.
There are full- and half-floor apartments with 14-foot ceilings, as well as an arched penthouse with incredible views, which hit the market in March for $33,000,000.
The team behind 180 East 88th Street announced Hooss would be designing the lobby piece in 2017. The esteemed German artist was previously commissioned to create custom stucco art at the Château Miraval and has taken part in many historical restorations, including Dresden Castle.
“We’ve always looked for creative ways to add art into our projects, as we believe art and architecture go hand-in-hand,” McMillan, founder, chair, and CEO of Azur and DDG.
“For 180 East 88th Street, an entirely custom and bespoke project, and the tallest building on the Upper East Side — we wanted to create a statement piece that would give residents a dramatic opportunity to engage. Jan’s work reflects this creative vision and exemplifies timeless craftsmanship. This stunning piece brings the entire building together.”
